Anybody who loves canoeing will want to plan an epic trip on the iconic Pickerel River System – over 40 kilometres of stunning waterways from the Almaguin Highlands in the east to the French River in the west.
Showcasing the region’s signature scenery, the waterways were once a major transport method for the lumber industry here, but they now delight visitors and locals alike as a fantastic place to fish, boat and paddle.
Head out by canoe or kayak on an overnight or daytrip – you’ll have ample opportunity to photograph incredible landscape and wildlife, and there are numerous unique spots to stop along the way, including accommodations and restaurants. (A visit to one of these friendly places will introduce you to proprietors who can tell you more about the Pickerel River and the folks who’ve built their lives along it.)
Cottage resorts, lodges and other accommodations along the river and on many other beautiful lakes in the region are likely to have canoes and kayaks included in their rates or for rent – ask when you call to book. Or you can rent everything you need at a helpful outfitter in the area.
Paddlers will also want to check out routes and portage trails in Restoule and Grundy Provincial Parks – two of the most memorable places to paddle in the province.
